Programs

Brothers Learning and Achieving as Citizens: This program is an alternative learning opportunity that is designed to improve school citizenship, increase academic achievement, and reduce situations or behaviors that impede success in school for African-American males. This program is available at Stanback and Stanford Middle Schools.

Middle School After School: A North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention “Support Our Students” sponsored program, currently we have an after school program in each of the seven middle schools across Orange County and Chapel Hill. During the traditional school year, we typically serve 1200 students!

Project Smith Latino Initiative: This program was implemented in order to serve the growing needs of Latino students at Smith Middle School in Chapel Hill. Many of these students need extra support adjusting to the school environment, especially those whose primary language is not English. This program provides tutorial support as well as one-on-one mentoring.

The Green Awakening (TGA): This math and science initiative targets rising 9th graders across both school districts to aid in the middle to high school transition. The focus of the program is on “green” engineering and students take part in special projects such as the building of solar cars, solar ovens, and wind turbines. Through these projects and through field trips to area university science and engineering labs, students get a real-world application of the math and science education they receive. TGA starts with an intensive summer camp and follows through to high school and the traditional school year where students are involved in a club that helps them stay on track with academic goals they set with our site coordinators.

CIS AFTER 3: This program will serve approximately 30 students at each middle school in both CHCCS and OCS (all seven schools are Title I schools). The mission of CIS AFTER 3 is to enhance academic competencies with hands on practical application and enrichment activities to students. The CIS AFTER 3 program will be centered on several modules: sustainable energy, model judiciary, and visual and performance arts. Each module will last approximately 2-2.5 months. Academic support and character education will be ongoing throughout the year. The 21st CCLC Afterschool Program is one of the largest afterschool programs in the nation. Grants are provided from the US Department of Education.
